Here is what my MP3 player needs: a "This is what I was in the mood for!" button that would switch from shuffle to playing the album to which the current track belongs.

Or if it were really smart, it could have different options. "Play this band now," instead of just "play this album."

Because I am lazy and don't want to have to pick the thing up and scroll down to whatever it has found that I was really in the mood for, and push buttons and such until it's playing that instead of randomness.

And if it were really, really smart, I could tag different tracks or albums or bands with keywords, and then tell it "Play me everything that's autumn-day music" or something. Because, again with the laziness, I don't know that I want a playlist like that until I'm sitting here wishing I had it.

If ipods can do these things, I'm not sure I want to know. I am both proud of and sensitive about choosing a non-ipod player, for a combination of reasons, but in there is a bit of hating the ipod interface and thinking the jukebox is genuinely better, but also feeling like the cool kids have ipods and they are more widely supported, but then again, being cooler than the cool kids because I can force itunes's stupid proprietary format to play on my terms, dammit.
