On the Shortcomings of the Sims Interface

Matt clicked furiously to try to make the little telescope icon go away. "Damn it, Near, quit that and eat!"

"What the fuck are you doing?" Mello said, looking up from his homework.

"Amusing myself 'til you're done."

"You made a Near sim?" Apparently Mello was done; he shoved the book and papers aside and crawled right into Matt's personal space to eye the screen.

"I made sims of all of us."

"Lemme see." The usual scuffle ensued as Mello tried to wrest the controller away and Matt put up enough of a fight to seem sporting--he didn't actually care. Victorious, Mello clicked around the character information. "He's afraid of public restrooms? That's fucking beautiful."

"I made him extra-shy. He's kinda troubled."

Mello snorted. "No shit. Hey. Where are we?"

"Um. Sleeping. OK, I need that back before Near starves to death."

It was too late, of course. Mello switched focus to the sim of himself and zoomed in right away on the animated, post-coital redhead and blond. Matt looked away and eyed the window, thinking that surely he could get away with smoking in here once.

"Don't tell me we just-"

"They did it on their own!" Matt protested.

This was not exactly true. Sim seduction was a lot of work, really. And it was possible Matt had made the Mello sim's personality just a little too accurate. It was practically a full-time job keeping his Fun meter up, and he'd been in no mood for the Matt sim to flirt with him for the longest time. The real Matt had grown to utterly loathe the sight of those double minus signs.

"Did they."

"Fine. I... might've nudged them a little."

"Did you."

Impossible to read Mello when he got like this; he might've been fighting laughter or calculating where to land a punch. Matt's index and middle fingers twitched as he thought again about the cigarette he wasn't smoking.

The game had gone into fast-forward when Mello had chosen his character, and it slowed up now as their two counterparts woke up. He clicked on the Matt sim and scoffed. "These options suck."

"Wh- Why?" Fighting laughter... right? A punch would've happened by now.

"There's no 'tell him to kiss me' command." He looked over, and the smile broke through the façade.

Matt grinned. "That works just as well." So he kissed him.
