I almost always try to finish any book I've started, but sometimes I get disgusted and can't. That kind of happened with Good in Bed.

It's about a plus-size gal dealing with a recent breakup and the fact that her columnist ex has just written an article called "Loving a Larger Woman." It was fine for the first third or so. Cannie was smart and likeable, but then she started to get whiny and clingy and pathetic about the ex, finally sleeping with him after his dad's funeral, in a scene that I thought was icky because I couldn't decide who was behaving worse: Cannie for going ahead and sleeping with her emotionally frail ex, or the ex for letting it happen even though he was clearly not that interested and didn't intend to get back together with her.

Around page 100 I thought I'd figured out who Cannie was going to end up with, and when I flipped ahead to check (I was right), I happened to see "You're so thin," she finally said.

That's right, the plus-size gal is not plus-size by the end of the book. There's even an interview in the back matter in which the author complains about that happening! But she doesn't say anything about doing it in her own book. I guess she would argue that getting thin wasn't a requirement for Cannie's happy ending, and sure, there's a reason it happens. But the kicker for me was that Cannie hasn't even noticed she's lost so much weight until that sentence.

OK, look here. I've been fat most of my life. I've lost weight without trying. But I have never been so miserable, so stressed, or so out of it that I failed to notice my clothes getting looser. And that's only 5 or 10 pounds' worth of looser, not 40 like in the book.

So I gave up on it.

I spent too much at Buns & Noodle and got Cassie Clare's novel, which is pretty cool so far, as well as an impluse buy based mostly on the gorgeousness of the book and illustrations, The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow, which is apparently also an anime series. I was there in the first place to get volume 3 of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. A smart person would have seen that the store didn't have her intended purchase and would have left. A smart person would not have gone over to the YA section and found 8 books she wanted right away. :-) But having done so, a smart person would probably have pared the 8 down to a more reasonable 2.

Today I'm going to make miso soup, now that I have the ingredients for dashi. I use bonito in my dashi even though I'm mostly a vegetarian. It's just better. I was also planning to make sesame tofu, but I accidentally bought sesame dressing instead of sesame paste. I might try to fake something up with what I have.

It's thundering now and might finally storm; clouds have been building up without dumping any rain for a few days now. I hope that'll wash some of the humidity out of the air. Going outside has been like swimming through warm, wet cotton balls. ICK.
