Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 4 x 100
Characters and/or Pairings: Mello/Matt, L, Near, Halle
Big Exit
In the end it's like this.
You can beg for your life from people who couldn't give less of a shit about you, who see you as a criminal, a heretic, who'll never know your name or that you love someone. You can rage at the injustice of it all, how the world's in the fucking toilet and these guys, these smug assholes, are part of the problem.
Or you can laugh at how stupid this is, how you're one of the good guys but you're outmaneuvered and outgunned. You can laugh like your lover would if it were him.
Clay Feet
Mello was a little disappointed how easy it was. He'd been ready to sneak around, evade pursuers, pick locks. But there was just a door left ajar on the third floor, and the blue glow of a monitor. Mello peeked in.
The greatest detective in the world was hunched up in a chair, tapping away at the keyboard. Barefoot, Mello noticed, and with a crazy nest of hair that looked like he'd never combed, or even washed, it. He didn't look like a legend at all.
Freak, Mello thought, trying to summon scorn.
But he went back the next day.
Justice and Mercy
When he hears Amane has died, Near picks up her finger puppet. The figures have been lined up on a shelf for over a year, and though he seldom looks at them, he is never unaware of their presence.
He moves Misa to the side where Mello, L, and Mikami already stand, and Halle, at the next computer over, raises an eyebrow.
"She is Kira's final victim," Near says.
"I don't like Mello and L being with those two."
"Justice," Near says, quoting, "should remove the bandage from her eyes long enough to distinguish between the vicious and the unfortunate."
Between the Lines
The thing about Matt is he's smart enough that he could be sneaky, but too much of a fucking dork to pull it off, and it's somehow impossible to say no to someone who never asks for anything.
But he is asking, isn't he, when he looks up from his game, tries to smile, and can't meet Mello's eyes? He's asking if his trust is justified. Mello knows he can't give Matt the future he's put his faith in, but he slides closer and kisses him, and tells himself the answer Matt will read into it isn't really a lie.
