The Homer-ism I had totally wrong: Can't talk, seeing Flanders. Later, sex.
In a lovely bit of serendipity, right when I started thinking I might wanna watch Fullmetal Alchemist and see what the big deal is, Cartoon Network got back around to episode 1.
Believe the hype. I really liked it. I am mightily impressed with the handling of backstory in this ep: just enough so you're not lost, put in very intelligently at just the right moments. I've heard a guideline for writing that goes something like "Never reveal something to the audience until they care about it," but I have never seen it practiced so well.
It's practiced better than in Samurai Champloo, where they tend to wait a looong time after you care to reveal anything.
