I am still watching the news out of NOLA, and I am still shocked and saddened and angered by the federal government's slow and shoddy response to so much human suffering. [livejournal.com profile] thete1 has been writing about the disaster for pretty much the whole time it's been going on, and her passion and talent and collections of links (for news, how you can help, opinions, etc.) make her LJ a very good source for Katrina ponderings and info.

That said, onward to the frivolity.

ChefBoy flew in from Denver Wednesday night, and we basically just vegged out that evening.

Thursday we had brunch at the formerly-mediocre-but-now-really-good breakfast place near my house, got coffee, stocked up on pop, water, and driving music, and headed off for the Gorge.

People in Washington probably know this, but a lot of my non-local friends have asked about it or had misconceptions. The Gorge is actually a gorge. It overlooks the Columbia River, and it looks like this. I had never been there before, and wow.

Thanks to 10 Club, ChefBoy and I had really nice seats in about row 18. We were amused to discover that Jeff Ament's parents were right across the aisle from us. (They were just adorable--his dad videotaped the whole show, and his mom grinned ear-to-ear when Eddie made a joke about Jeff skateboarding the whole way from Montana--and they made me smile a lot.)

Instead of an opening band, we got an extra acoustic set, which included Low Light just as the sun was setting. It was gorgeous and perfect. They started the all-electric part with Given to Fly, and pretty much from the time that song kicked into gear and the lights went up, the energy in the place was huge and amazing. All the guys were jumping around the stage like it was 1992 all over again.

ChefBoy freaked over getting to hear Blood; I freaked over Alone (which I think they've played every night since, but at the time was on my list of "Songs I am resigned to never hearing live") and In My Tree. But the biggest treat of all was Crown of Thorns.

I didn't keep a setlist like I used to. The guy in the couple next to us was, and I had to smile every time he whipped out his pen and jotted down the new song.

The show was almost 4 hours, and it was the best concert I've ever been to, by anyone.

The Vancouver show was really good too, but, lacking the length and the stunning natural setting, not quite as special. They did mix up the setlist a bit. We got Footsteps and (!!!) Bee Girl on Friday. The same couple we'd sat next to at the Gorge was next to us again, and they were going on to Calgary for one more show.

We heard Alive, Black, and Ledbetter both nights, and had an entirely Jeremy-free experience, so I was not complaining too bitterly when I lamented the lack of Red Mosquito. It just would have made everything perfect.

So on Saturday ChefBoy went home, and I took a nap before going to meet up with new Seattleite [livejournal.com profile] isrephael and his friends and resume normal life. :)

heheheheh....I noticed that....and I see that they played Jeremy at Edmonton....I remember when my friend Lori and I went to the Irvine shows in 2003, either night 1 or night 2 there where these 2 drunk girls behind us with a guy and they just kept talking the entire show about how they were so into Pearl Jam when they were in high school blah blah blah. Then they would keep screaming for them to play Jeremy and if they didn't they would kick their ass.....needless to say PJ didn't play the song and I was one happy woman!!!

I wonder what they will whip out for the Latin American tour....
