How come the last week of waiting for HBP seems longer than the whole two years of waiting preceding it? Is the book creating some sort of Doppler effect with anticipation as it gets closer to me?

I may well make a "Can't post. Reading." banner to put up on Saturday.[1] :-) (Better than last year, when I told everyone, "Sorry I can't be social; I'm going to be curled up with a fifteen-year-old boy for a few days.")

[1] Tangent! Wish I could remember that whole Homer-ism. "Can't talk, eating, sex later"? My favorite Homer-ism is still "Euw, slimy. Ow! Pointy! Whoa! Moving!" But "Mmm, floor pie" is a close contender.

The Homer-ism I had totally wrong: Can't talk, seeing Flanders. Later, sex.

In a lovely bit of serendipity, right when I started thinking I might wanna watch Fullmetal Alchemist and see what the big deal is, Cartoon Network got back around to episode 1.

Believe the hype. I really liked it. I am mightily impressed with the handling of backstory in this ep: just enough so you're not lost, put in very intelligently at just the right moments. I've heard a guideline for writing that goes something like "Never reveal something to the audience until they care about it," but I have never seen it practiced so well.

It's practiced better than in Samurai Champloo, where they tend to wait a looong time after you care to reveal anything.
