Now, Takeshi Obata's brain only contains so many character designs. This is a widely believed fact. (E.g., Light = Matt.) It's not a problem, really, given how pretty said designs are, but it does make for the double takes when one sees his new work.

capslock_dn. I couldn't stop trying to make sense of this picture.
The cover is so lovely, but the story is so WTF-inducing, I just made up my own little story in which Matt somehow got out of that wall of police, felt bad for Misa and took her away, and later Near raided Mello's closet and decided to join them. Now they travel the world in their magic car, chasing down rumors that Mello is still out there somewhere. Also, they fight crime!
They had to alter their appearances slightly to keep from attracting the attention of Kira's remaining supporters, but you can still tell it's them.
In Episode 1, I think Matt secretly arranges for their hotel room to have only one bed.
Matt: Oh well, what can ya do? We'll just have to share.
Near: It does seem logical...
Misa: Matt, you are such a pervert!
Matt (aside to Misa): I meant all of us.
Misa: Oh. Shutting right up.
ETA: Cripes, I think this thing is gaining a cracky life of its own.
OK, actually, it goes like this.
Episode 1: Matt finds Misa and convinces her that she wants to go on an adventure instead of jumping off a building. She is despondent after the loss of Light, but since Matt looks so much like him, it's almost like he's still around, and in her poor grief-addled mind, that's good enough.
Episode 2: Near starts receiving mysterious text messages from an untraceable number. He thinks it's a shame Matt isn't around, because he might be able to work his techie magic and at least figure out whence they originate. Upon reviewing some police tapes, he realizes that Matt gave some sort of clue that he had a plan to survive (no, I don't know what yet, shut up). So he disguises himself and sets out to find Matt.
And then there are little interludes where L pops up as a kind of mentor/Jedi ghost guy. As the series progresses, Misa finds a purpose in life in atoning for her misdeeds by fighting crime. It doesn't hurt that Matt is like unto Light, only, you know, without teh evil. And the theme music is "The Way." TRUFAX.

Bits of this crazy AU keep popping into my head in the way stories do sometimes. Gah. It's like crack is my defense mechanism to keep from going mad from the sadness of actual canon.

I do not think my crack could be much crackier than the reality.
I've actually kind of been pondering it.
JeevasJebus knows I have enough WIPs already, but it's kind of irresistible. Especially Jedi!L talking about how the biggest problem with being dead is that you can't eat cake anymore. And there's a magic car!no subject
