How about a brief introduction? I'm darkluna, and EllieF at the Pit and AFF.
Fabulous! And what got you into fanfiction to begin with? I was writing fanfiction before I knew the term for it. I fixate on things. (O RLY?) When the thing I fixate on is someone else's universe, I like to live there for a while and play with it.
I see. So what kind of fanfiction do you like to write? I write a pretty wide variety. There's almost always some romantic aspect, because I'm a sap. Also, in a lot of my fandoms, canon doesn't pay much attention to romantic relationships, and I get the urge to fill in the gaps. I'm trying my hand at mystery/suspense. I write crack sometimes, and humor sometimes. And smut. Whatever strikes my fancy.
Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the aspects of writing you struggle most with? Sometimes writing is very easy. The best is when an idea grabs me and I have to write it down. Sometimes ideas wake me up in the middle of the night. I write in pieces, as I've mentioned before, and connecting them can be hard. The hardest part for me is making sure everything flows. And I always want each story to be meaningful in some way, to say something about the characters other than "They did some stuff, and it was like this." Communicating that can be hard. And I'm not the greatest plotter in the world. It doesn't come naturally to me the way description does.
Write a few sentences or so of your favorite pairing or character. I am all about the Wammy's boys right now. Quirky geniuses? Sign me right up. Oh, oops, that says "of," not "on." Here's something I just wrote:
At some point Matt noticed that Near would touch him every once in a while when they were talking, just brief touches on his arm or knee. Near never did anything without a reason, so Matt went back into observational mode.
A tug on his sleeve before, "I don't like green vegetables." A tap of his foot against Matt's boot before, "Mello hates me, but I don't hate anyone." He even took Matt's hand for a second when he let him into his room to show him the huge crazy rollercoaster thing he'd built over the whole floor.
Matt couldn't decide if Near needed to make contact before saying anything even remotely personal, or if it was just a way of making sure he paid attention. He didn't mind, either way. Not that he would ever tell Near, but sometimes he entertained the vague idea that he was socializing him. Like a really, really smart feral cat, or something.
Are there any fanfiction clichés or trends you're sick of or just can't stand? *&^% Mary Sues. We all do it; it's a rite of passage. God knows I've written my share. I just hate it when fanbrats post their little Sue stories and expect everyone to fall all over themselves saying how great they are.
Are you guilty of any fanfiction clichés you hate? Or any other ones? Not really. If I do use a cliché, I try to give it a twist.
What was the first fandom you wrote for, and do you still like/participate in it? X-Files, and nope. Once the seriesstarted to suck ended, I moved on.
Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them that you love to write. Mello, Matt, and Near, in any combination. Oh, my boys. ♥ They're all so freakin' smart, and so different, and fascinating and lovely, each in his own way. I love playing with the dynamics between them. (I really think if they'd teamed up, no one would've died.)
I was going to attempt to figure out why I gravitate to Near so much when I write, but I think all that would come out would be GAH NEEEAAAARRR YOU MORSEL OF SNARKY GENIUS HOW I LOVE YOU.
I still have some FMA fic simmering in the back of my head. I love Ed/Hei because I am bent for stoic pining. I love Ed in general because I am bent for characters who are broken and strong and fucked-up and awesome.
What would you call your writing style? I 'unno. I used to err on the side of overexplaining, and now I might err on the side of sparseness, but people are awesome, and they always seem to get the subtle things. I try to pay attention to little details, and I try to get what I see onto the page as much as I possibly can. I guess I'd say I'm a descriptive writer.
Do you read other people’s fanfic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most? Of course! I love and crave long chaptered fics. But I also like drabble-y things that capture just one moment perfectly (*cough*Rinna*cough*). People who plot well always get my hero worship.
Name one thing you'd LOVE to write, but have been too afraid or shy to do. I don't know if there is anything I'm afraid to do. There may be some things that end up not working and get hidden under the figurative mattress, but I'll try anything that gets me excited about writing it.
Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the dreaded bloated ego? I take criticism pretty well. It's always helpful to know if something didn't work for someone, and the people who review my stuff have always been really nice. I don't think my ego is bloated. If anything, I think the reason I always want more more more reviews is that I'm insecure.
When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room? It depends on the story. I can't compose well sitting at the computer, so me writing = me curled up on the couch with headphones or the TV for inspiration or background noise.
What inspires you? Lots of things. Randomly talking to people. The stuff I'm thinking when I stare into space. :-) Usually a story starts when a scene pops into my head unannounced, and then I have to figure out what goes around it.
Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and yourself as a writer? My experiences have been great. I love fandom so much. It's instant not-aloneness. ♥
Being a writer is how I define myself. It's my answer to "What do you do?" I think writing any kind of fiction is about using people who are imaginary to say things that are very real, and that's what I try to do.
