Pet bands

No, not bands I would like to keep as pets. Maybe another time for that. Heh. I'm sure everyone who loves music as much as I do has at least a few artists they *love*, but of whom no one else seems to have heard. I will now pimp mine.

1. The Walkabouts. In a fair and just world, the Walkabouts would be superstars, and Britney Spears would be asking people if they'd like fries with that. It's kind of hard to describe their music. It's basically rock, but sometimes it's folksy, sometimes it's poppy, and sometimes it's kick-ass-y. They bring so many different influences into it. And Carla Torgerson has an amazing voice. They are incredibly prolific, and even I haven't caught up with their output yet. I'd recommend Setting the Woods on Fire as a starting point.

2. Shelleyan Orphan. One might call them "chamber pop." They do beautiful, lush, poetic songs that strike me as very Victorian. Maybe it's their image, but I think it's also their lyrics and the ornateness of their music. They're kind of like the musical equivalent of John Crowley's prose.

3. Rocket From the Crypt. At last, butt rock for the thinking person! They got me with "Ditchdigger," which has some of the yummiest guitar you'll ever hear. I get a UFO vibe from them - they're raunchy and kick-ass and a little campy.

4. Grey Eye Glances. I was very happy to discover them right around the time I was sorely missing October Project. They're similar, but a little poppier and less mysterious. Eventide is their best album (so far), but their earlier EPs like Further On are really worth it if you can find them.

5. Moxy Fruvous. They have legions of devoted fans, but it's rare for me to find someone else who likes them outside of a concert. They are cool. Also, their drummer is a stone cold hottie. :-) They started as a cappella buskers in Toronto, and their lyrics are still the highlight for me. (edited to add: I am not kidding about the hottie thing.)

6. The Mountain Goats. They are bitter, mean, bitter, talented, hilarious, bitter people.

7. Firewater. They sound like if a circus broke out at a rock concert. A creepy Something-Wicked-This-Way-Comes circus, with lots of body parts in jars in the oddities tent, and no nets under the trapeze artists.

also edited to add: some I forgot the first time around...

8. The Wrens. So purty. Shimmery, gorgeous indie pop. I am still on a mission to find Seacaucus, which many people think is their best album. I listen to Meadowlands all the time.

9. Drive-By Truckers. Mmm, Allman Brothers for the new century. Thoughtful Southern rock. I love me those guitars.

I adore Moxy and RftC. I'll have to check out the others.
