Why is it that the only jobs people ever actually contact me about are ones for which I'm not remotely qualified? Does one little mention of SGML and XML on my resume (a buried mention that translates to "I have worked in SGML in emacs and know what XML is and how it works") outweigh the title of the resume being "Experienced editor"? Do 8 years of experience as an editor indicate that in some deep, hidden way I have a burning desire to be a data analyst?

If I tried to be a data analyst, I would 1. Not be able to do it because I have no idea how, and 2. Drink Clorox within 15 minutes because the concept is so boring to me that I can stand to proofread the book I have about data modeling only if I have really interesting music playing.

But apparently this is not clear enough from my resume, because some guy called me yesterday about a job, and blithered about on auto-salesguy for about ten minutes, using words like "solutions" and "niche," with nary a word recognizable as a product or service they actually provide. When I realized he was off in some corporate-speak loop of his own, I stopped listening and merely leapt in the first time he paused to reinflate. "I'm an editor," I said. "Is there editing in this job?"

He couldn't tell me whether there was editing in the job or not. Oh, he said a lot, but it was a reply to my question, not an answer, as if he believed that saying words that came after the question, with no further relation to it, was sufficient. Finally he admitted he didn't know what the job actually involved and said he'd send a job description. No job description yet, which is just as well, because they are clearly one of those companies that does something one step removed from actual work. Their web site uses phrases like We believe in a budget driven implementation model that drives technology use.

Yeah! There's a belief I can get behind. I do believe in a budget-driven implementation model, I do, I do!

*sighs*
