In honor of finally getting most of my music loaded onto my MP3 player, again, and because
needfulthings just did it, and we all wish we were as cool as he is ;-), my list of lines from randomized songs:
Edited after
needfulthings and
zinnea kicked some butt... now the tough ones are left. Also, I guess no one is surprised I have Corey Hart's greatest hits. Also also, I am shocked that #20 has gone unidentified.
1. You sit there looking so cool, like the whole show was passing you by "Tell the Truth" by Derek & the Dominos.
2. Just a little uncertainty can bring you down "Never Surrender" by the immortal Corey Hart.
3. I want to tell you that I love you, but does it really matter? "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" by Mother Love Bone.
4. Cut steel wired into water, fixed link circumnavigate "Feel It Turn" by Great Big Sea
(There is something intensely satisfying about singing "circumnavigate," much like the joy I, oddly, derive from belting out "exhaling" in "Dying promises they lie/Exhaling for the last time.")
5. The men who spurred us on sit in judgment of our wrong "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who
6. So I got you to at least say please; that's how I know you're on your knees "Fast Way" by Letters to Cleo
7. When a heart is broken, it still goes on pumping
8. It's just I'm feeling invincible, and it has me terrified "Conquer Me" by Blues Traveler
9. You will drink by numbers, I will drink by faith
10. A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw, delivered him wings "Given to Fly" by Pearl Jam
11. It's a long way up there to heaven, but it's OK 'cause we're singing with the angels
12. I wanted you, but I'm over that now
13. You take my air to breathe, and I let you back again, tell me what does that make me? "Demon Rock" by L to C
14. I wish I could buy back the woman you stole "Y Control" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
15. When I sleep is when you rise
16. Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry "Paranoid" by Sabbath. My actual favorite part of this song is the crunchy guitar, but there's no way to indicate that textually.
17. I dream I see white horses dance upon that other ocean
18. I'm feeling like a loaded gun "Down on the World Again" by Social D
19. I can't believe that the axis turns on suffering when you taste so good "This is Love" by PJ Harvey
20. What was I thinking when I said it didn't hurt?
21. I should have fought him, but instead I let him take you "Fight Test" by Flaming Lips. One of the songs I listened to incessantly for about a week. Not sure why; it just stuck to me for some reason.
22. I changed by not changing at all It's funny how you guys start with "Elderly woman..." but I always abbreviate this one as "Small Town."
23. Window down, feel the moonlight on your skin "The Golden Age" - Beck song, Flaming Lips version
24. Dream...think it is, and it's already done
25. I've been a bad, bad girl "Criminal" by Fiona Apple
On that note... :-) Have at it!
Represented on this list, among others: two bands I almost always put on my list if I have to pick my three all-time favorites, a band I'm pretty sure no one but me has heard of, two songs I had on autorepeat for days on end at different times, a song I am newly in love with, and a song from an album some of you may be surprised I own. Also: 14 versions of Ledbetter on this thing, and it doesn't pop up once? Weird.

Date: 2005-01-30 08:20 am (UTC)2. Corey Hart - Never Surrender (I used to actually dig his voice)
3. Pearl Jam - Crown of Thorns (knew there'd be something by them on here)
4. Great Big Sea - Feel It Turn (and I know exactly what you mean
5. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (did the song in an early cover band)
6. Letters To Cleo - Fast Way (I think you knew I'd get this one)
8. Blues Traveler - Conquer Me (Best. Harmonica. Player. Ever.)
10. Pearl Jam - Given To Fly (okay, two surprised me)
13. Letters To Cleo - Demon Rock (hmm, I sense...themes here)
14. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control (now color me impressed)
16. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (what band guy hasn't done this one?)
18. Social Distortion - Down On The World Again (another band that never got their proper due)
19. PJ Harvey - This Is Love (she almost get huge last year after all this time)
21. Flaming Lips - Fight Test (one of my favorite underrateds)
22. Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town (and there's the trifecta!)
23. Beck - The Golden Age (sometimes I love him, sometimes I hate him, always I listen)
25. Alright...this is tough, because I know TWO songs that have this line in it: Dear Diary by Pink and Criminal by Fiona Apple. If I were a betting man, I'd guess that it's the latter you have. Call it a hunch. ;)
So how'd I do?

Date: 2005-01-30 07:34 pm (UTC)3. Pearl Jam - Crown of Thorns (knew there'd be something by them on here) There is, but this is Jeff 'n' Stone's earlier band.
And The Golden Age was the Flaming Lips version, but no one can be expected to know that. :-) Yes, three bands came up twice out of god only knows how many are on there. And yeah, #25 is Fiona Apple.
A whopping 15! I find myself surprised you know Great Big Sea. I thought they were more obscure than that except amongst folky types.

Date: 2005-01-30 11:12 pm (UTC)I suck.
And I *love* obscure bands. We definitely need to compare notes.

Date: 2005-01-30 11:38 pm (UTC)I bet we have that near-perfect distribution of favorites, where we can be reasonably sure our taste is similar, but happen to have heard of different bands. :-)

Date: 2005-01-31 06:25 am (UTC)Neutral Milk Hotel
Rocket From the Crypt
Oysterband
Sea Ray
And the Wrens and the Walkabouts especially out of the random songs. And I'm always raving about Goodness, and I bet you'd love Anthem. I'm sure you've heard Elliott Smith? Your music reminds me a lot of his. I've got more, just say the word. :-)

Date: 2005-01-31 06:42 am (UTC)I was two for four out of your choices above as far as having heard them. First two no, last two yes.
Oysterband is the fave of mine out of those two; always reminds me of CSNY with a bit of Madness mixed in.
Sea Ray gives me quite a Redd Kross vibe. That's a good thing, since they're one I was going to recommend to you. The singer leaves me a bit dry, but the songs are too good to avoid due to that.
As far as for you, I would first recommend:
Enuff Z'Nuff (my biggest influence)
Jellyfish (as in get them NOW)
Matthew Sweet
Redd Kross
Big Star
I'll check out the rest of these; thanks! :)

I am in LOVE with NMH. RftC rocks harder and is raunchier. They remind me of UFO a bit.

They make me think of Great Big Sea if they listened to more Pogues or Social D.

LOVE Matthew Sweet and Big Star. Vaguely recall good things about Jellyfish and Redd Kross. Sonic Youth is springing to mind for some reason. Who knows what connections my mind has in there? :) I've never really listened to Enuff Z'Nuff, but your recommendation is enough to make me give them a try.

10. "Given to Fly" Pearl Jam
16 "Paranoid" Black Sabbath
