So I've been working on my post-apocalyptic fairytale for a long time. One of my characters can step into an alternate universe. I realized that when he does, he's taking someone's place. Then I wondered what it must have done to his other half, who senses the truth of what's happening to him but thinks it means he's insane. There really isn't room for that story in the book I'm writing.

Valor Donnelly knew he was insane by the time he was thirteen.

When it started, he didn't understand what was happening, but over the years he saw clearly enough. Someone else lived in his mind, forced him into shadow. He could fight back and regain control, but it was always hard.

He never spoke of it, not to anyone. He couldn't have found the words even if he had been able to conquer the shame that bound him to silence. He just tried to live with it, to live around it. To live in spite of it.

There were days, sometimes, of feeling blessedly alone, of being just one person. If he made the invader leave him at those times, he never knew how. He couldn't connect a cause to the effect. He thought it was probably outside his control, like so much else.

Eventually, he would discover ways to keep the invasion at bay more reliably.
