Having watched a bit of "I Love the 90s, part deux," I think I can say without fear of contradiction that Michael Ian Black is the least funny person on the planet.
My heart just broke in two, crumbled, and is running away in pieces. Crying.
I haven't seen his work on I Love the 90s II but absolutely adore him on everything else. He's number-three on my "freebie" list based on wit alone. Wit, and forearms.
I think he has his moments. Sometimes it feels like he's trying too hard, but I find that when he's on, he's ON. At least he's better than most of the celebrities that they put on there.
I think you need to see him actually doing something to like him. I hated him from his little quippy bullshit on those shows too, but that changed when I saw Wet Hot American Summer. Seeing him in action (or possibly just seeing him get some action - yay) lifted the hate retroactively. When you see him doing what he's good at, thus putting the smarmy bastardry in context, it's all much more palatable. I found him loathsome before, and post-film, I find him sort of attractive. Give it a go - it'll make watching VH1 a lot easier, at the very least.
You're must not be old enough to remember the show The State. I've liked that guy since that show. I think MIB is a very funny guy, but I have only seen a few minutes of the 90's show. His Johnny Bluejeans character on Viva Variety was only so-so, and his recent softdrink commercials with that portly character actor guy are pretty amusing to me.
